I'm Engaged - Friday, August.11 2006
Well I have finally asked my girlfriend to marry me. After 4 years of being friends, 2 of which we dated, we have taken the next step.
On the night of Friday, August.11 2006, I proposed to my girlfriend while she was asleep. On the surface this wouldn't make much sence, but let me explain ....
For the past year I have been trying my hardest to avoid the topic of marriage as much as possible, if the topic came up I would feign interest or just brush it off, much to Steph's consternation.
I have been thinking about this since early 2006, it has taken me awhile to get the resources together to be able to get her an appropriate ring, but the day finally arrived. On thursday I went with my mom to People's to find something that I was happy with. Took about 30 minutes to find something and I walked out with a nice chunk of rock!
Let me digress here for a minute; you know how everyone always wants to do something real special, real spectacular? well I could very well have done the traditional (dinner at a nice place, go for a walk, ask her then) but I am not a huge fan of 'traditional' (stop snickering). I was all set to make some sort of huge public spectacle, something like asking her in a huge crowd and asking for everyone's attention, that sort of thing. Something I know would have made her REALLY embarrassed. My original plan was go get her up to TO and go for one of those lakeshore dinner cruises, during which I would make a public moment about asking her. My wonderful sister talked me out of this plan, perhaps it wouldn't go so well if she was so embarrassed, so instead i thought up of something different.
I still wanted to do something special, something memorable. I came up with this: I would slide the ring onto her finger during the night and let her wake up with the ring on her finger!
I had a rather large problem with all of this though, I wasn't completly sure about her ring size! as part of my plan I couldn't really go into stores and get her sized, I mean, that is such a dead give away. so I guessed! problem? well if I chose the wrong size I would wake her up in the middle of the night trying to jam a ring onto the finger and ... poof! ... there goes the surprise. That or get one too big and have it fall off when she rolls over. So here was my solution; get Stephy drunk! (or at least very tipsy)
ok back onto the right track; so I drove down there on friday afternoon, I got there just before steph got home from work. i know she liked screwdrivers, so I stopped to get some OJ. As it turns out I should have gotten some vodka too, because there was none left at her place. So I substituted the vodka with some rum (eh! its all clear). we had some watermelon pucker as chasers. Well it didn't take too much (only like 3 drinks and 4 shots) and she got tipsy enough. so after I put her to bed I stayed up abit longer reading my book, just to make sure she was good and passed out.
So, now the moment of truth came. I pulled out the ring and it slid onto her finger, it was a perfect fit (not too big and not too small) ... phew! ... my alternative would have been to leave the box open on the night stand. now I could go to bed.
Well morning came, I was up at like 8am, early as usual, Steph was still asleep! I picked up my book to read until she woke up. Now this is were it was really fun, eventually she got up, went to the bathroom and came back out. now the look on her face? for lack of a better term, PRICELESS. A mix between total confusion, disbelief and excitement, simply awesome, I couldn't have asked for better. She came out asking "Is there something I missed last night?". Told her that she didn't miss a thing, that is when I asked her if she would marry me!.
